Girl
Scouting is open to ALL girls regardless of racial,
religious, social, ethnical, economical or special needs
factors. However without leaders there can not be troops to
put the girls in. Girl Scouts depend on committed and
motivated volunteers to serve as leaders to provide quality
program to girls. We need leaders to help our girls grow
strong. Please see GSUSA page on
Volunteering for more
information
If you
are interested in providing leadership in the Green Oaks
Service Unit below are some frequently asked questions. If
you have one that is not covered below please send an e-mail
to BC
Norton.
1. What do Girl
Scout volunteers look like?
- They
are mothers, fathers, grandparents, neighbors, and teachers.
They are from all nationalities, economic backgrounds and
age levels. They are housewives, corporate executives,
laborers, college students and retirees. Girl Scout
volunteers are committed adults who want to help girls
develop skills that will make them resourceful, competent
and successful adults.
2. What are the
qualifications to become a Girl Scout leader?
- Anyone can
be a girl scout leader as long as they are at least 18 years
old, committed to helping girls grow strong, willing to take
training and like to have fun! You do not have to
have a daughter in scouting to be a leader.
3.What do I need to do to
become a leader? -
Volunteers who would like to become a leader must first go
through a background check. Citrus Council provides this and
there is no charge. Once that is complete then a leader
takes a series of trainings to prepare her for leadership.
Please see the
Training Guidelines
webpage for more information on these trainings.
4. Who
do I contact?
- Please send your name and
phone number to
the
School Representative Director.
You will be contacted by the unit coordinator consultant in
the next few days.
5. Once my training is complete will their be a
support structure to help me -
Absolutely!
All leaders are part of a school group that is headed up by
a school coordinator. She is there to help you with any
questions or needs that you may have. Green Oaks has a
Team that is set up to assist leaders in various
areas such as camping, registration, product sales and unit
events. There is also the
Green Oaks website that
provides online resources for leaders.
6.
How do I recruit my troop and CO-Leaders?
- Once your
Volunteer Application and Background
Check clear your school organizer or
coordinator will set up a parent's meeting with prospective
girls and their parents. It is during that time that a CO
leader and troop committee will be recruited and the
registrations completed.
7. What do I
do during the meetings?
-
You will
learn about this during your trainings. Basically, Girl
Scout meetings consist of an opening, troop business (dues,
planning, etc.), activity (badge, craft etc.) , cleaning up
and a closing. Many also have a snack for the younger girls.
What your troop program is will be decided upon by you, your
CO-leaders and the girls in your troop. The Green Oaks
Website
Leader Resource Pages
can also
provide information to help you plan your troop program.
8. Are there any other Girl Scout volunteer
positions other than troop leaders?
-
Yes, at the troop level you can be the troop
First-Aider, camping mom, cookie or nut program chair. You
could help with troop program, arts and crafts or drive on
field trips. At the unit level you could serve on the
Team
in one of the many committee positions. For other
suggestions please see GSUSA's page on
Ways to Volunteer.
7. How will this
benefit me?
- Parents
who volunteer with Girl Scouts cite having a better
relationships with their daughters. You will also give back
to your community, be respected and appreciated, experience
new things, learn new
skills, make an instant network of adults and most
importantly make a difference in the life of a child.
